Paper Selection
Sign in with ORCID, choose an arXiv paper and review your co-author list. Enter an email for each unlinked coauthor, then Submit & invite.
Unanimous Quorum
Within 48 hours of submission, every coauthor signs in, confirms their authorship and approves the listing in one response. The paper must appear in each author’s linked arXiv author list.
Paper Listing
The paper is listed 24 hours after the final approval. Any author can withdraw approval before it appears. niXiv displays the title, authors, and abstract, linking to the paper on arXiv.
- Institutional verification. Only the submitter needs to verify an institutional email yearly. Unrecognized domains need admin approval.
- Two slots per author. Each selection reserves one slot per author for 365 days from submission. If the selection falls through, all reserved slots are returned.
- Seven days between proposals. This wait applies to the proposer, even if the previous paper is not published.
- 30,000 words and 60 pages maximum. Both limits include references and apply to the complete arXiv PDF being selected.
Motivation
Science needs space for careful reading and thoughtful conversation at a humane pace. niXiv aims to provide that space by inviting authors to select the work they consider among their best of the year, according to the criteria they value.
Limits on paper length and the number of selections are intended to keep the annual reading manageable. Our aim is that a researcher could, within reason, read the full papers listed in their subfield over the course of a year. At a moment of rapid change in science, we hope niXiv can offer common ground for sustained discussion and shared understanding. We also invite the community to consider how scientific papers should be read, assessed, and discussed.
Beyond the participation and submission rules described in Usage, a paper needs only to have been accepted on arXiv and approved for listing by all its authors. niXiv imposes no additional editorial restrictions on its content. Papers generated entirely by AI are therefore eligible.
We do not assume that every author already understands everything in the work they select. Our hope is that authors will choose papers they believe deserve the community’s attention, and that careful reading and discussion will turn that attention into human understanding.
We recognize that niXiv’s limits may be severe for some researchers. We welcome discussion of their effects and of how niXiv can better serve the community; please use Comments & suggestions below.
